'David After Dentist' Family Hits Payday

The second most watched video of 2009 now has over 54 million views and it's own YouTube channel, website, and official Facebook page. It has since become an internet meme and has been endlessly spoofed. "Is this real life?" has been trademarked by the family and merchandising and licensing has earned them a respectable sum. They have also been able to donate $6000 to charity and has ties with Operation Smile.

It's also been an unexpected bonanza for the boy's Orlando, Florida-area family, who, despite some criticism that they exploited their child by posting his image online, has turned the one-minute, 59-second home video into a lucrative sideline.
"We embraced it," said the boy's father, David DeVore, who shot the famous clip on a Flip camera from the car's front seat. "We said we will make a family adventure out of this and see what happens. Nothing has happened that we felt uncomfortable doing."
He would not say exactly how much the family has earned from the video but said it's in the "low six figures."

Wifi Thief Lady Calls TechGuy

I love how she keeps on about how 'it was a Linksys in my neighborhood...'
I mean, we've all been there. Moved into a new apartment, no internet hookup yet; don't want to pay for hotel wifi and find an open connection...but to intentionally leech on someone else's open wifi connection for a year and a half! This should convince you to secure your wifi if you haven't already. If not, who knows what is being downloaded or posted to the internet on your connection right now!

What Is A Browser?

A few months old, but relevant and eye-opening in light of the Facebook login debacle of last week.
Last week Read/Write Web created a minor flurry online after hundreds of people mistook the blog site for Facebook. Read/Write Web published a post entitled Facebook wants to be your one true login, which Google ranked very highly for the search term “Facebook login”. As a result, hundreds of people typed “Facebook login” into their search engine, clicked on the RWW link and thought they’d arrived at a redesigned Facebook. So they complained in the comment box.

The comment thread is hilarious. Ida Mitchell complains: “LIKED THE OLD FACEBOOK SING IN………….” That should be ’sign in’, I imagine, but I like the thought that somewhere there’s a Facebook “sing in”.

There are more than 1,600 comments, with long chains of users complaining that they can’t login to Facebook broken by the occasional bemused RWW regular trying to respond to the post or simply figure out what’s going on.

The Spark Series, Part 3: OPEN

A segment on Leo Laporte, part of The Spark Series, over at eguiders.
The story of TWiT really began at the Paul Allen backed TechTV Network, which Laporte helped launch in 1998 (formally known as ZDTV). Millions became aware of Laporte through successful shows like 'Call For Help' and 'The Screen Savers.' I was one of those viewers who tuned in to the network and became a fan of Leo's approachable style and genuine enthusiasm for helping us with our PC (Personal Confusers) issues. The Network wasn't reaching the scale of audience required by the mainstream media paradigms to survive. In 2004, TechTV became G4TV and switched its focus to gaming. In April of 2005, Laporte launched his flagship 'netcast' TWiT - This Week in Tech. Today, the network and its website twit.tv receives 2 million views per week.

Laporte still has a presence on terrestrial radio through his syndicated 'The Tech Guy,' heard on over 200 radio stations throughout the country. The broadcast is for those who want to hear about the latest gadgets and tech issues. TWiT visitors can explore the myriad of show offerings including 'net@night,' This Week in Google,' 'MacBreak Weekly' and 'Windows Weekly.' All the info about the TWiT network can be accessed through http://wiki.twit.tv.
