Office Space 10 Year Reunion Event

Mike Judge, Stephen Root, and Gary Cole were among the stars that showed up last night at Austin's legendary Paramount Theater for a unique event: a 10th anniversary screening of Judge's 1999 film Office Space.
Fans started gathering outside the Paramount around 6:30pm for the 8pm showing. Local news as well as G4TV were there interviewing fans beforehand and filming the red carpet arrival of the cast.
Judge and his family were the first to arrive at 7:30 to a crowd of cheering fans. Shortly after, the remaining cast arrived in a separate limo. This included David Herman, Ajay Naidu, Gary Cole, Stephen Root, John C. McGinley, Diedrich Bader, Paul Willson, Kinna McInroe, and Todd Duffey. Several cast members re-enacted the printer smashing scene from the film right there on the red carpet.
Vendors hawked Office Space swag inside including Initech t-shirts, bags of flair, and Office Space Blu-rays. The screening was met with wild applause to a packed theater. Mike Judge and the cast fielded questions after the showing.
Judge and a few other cast members milled about the lobby after the show signing autographs and talking to fans.

The Universe Is Expanding At Sci-Fi

This article, posted at New York Times, explains that the Sci-Fi Channel is expanding its content from typical fare like Star Trek and The Twilight Zone to shows like Ghost Hunters and movies like Field Of Dreams.
The letters still keep coming to the Rockefeller Center offices of the Sci Fi Channel. Please, they all say, pick up “Jericho,” the science fiction show with a small but passionate following that was canceled in March by CBS, for a third season.
But those letters are falling on deaf ears. The Sci Fi Channel, still viewed by many as a niche network, is no longer a repository for failed fantasy shows cast aside by the broadcast networks. Instead, through a mix of original shows, movies and syndicated reruns (including old “Jericho” episodes but no new ones), the network has expanded its audience, especially among women, chiefly by stretching the definition of science fiction.

A must watch for anyone who is or has been even a casual comics or animation fan; you don't have to know any character backstories or comics continuities. WGA Strike May Be Over

(Reuters) - Striking Hollywood writers could be back at work as early as Monday for the first time in three months if they embrace terms of a tentative contract deal that union leaders are expected to present them this weekend. The outcome hinges on meetings set for Saturday in New York and Los Angeles where rank-and-file members of the Writers Guild of America will be briefed on a labor pact taking shape in talks with studio executives over the past two weeks. Sources familiar with those talks have said a breakthrough was reached last Friday on key issues of paying film and TV writers for work distributed over the Internet, and the two sides have been busy since then fine-tuning contract language.
Well, it's about time. Michael Eisner is going so far as to say "It's over," and that the writers "would be insane if they turned" down the terms of the new deal.

WGA Strike May End Next Week

A breakthrough in contract talks has been reached between Hollywood studios and striking writers and could lead to a tentative deal as early as next week, a person close to the ongoing negotiations said Saturday. The two sides breached the gap Friday on the thorniest issues, those concerning compensation for projects distributed via the Internet, said the person, who requested anonymity because he were not authorized to speak publicly. A second person familiar with the talks, also speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to comment publicly, said that significant progress had been made and a deal might be announced within a week.

Sci Fi Channel Snaps Up Jericho

Sci Fi Channel has snapped up cable rerun rights to the post-apocalyptic drama "Jericho" from CBS Television Distribution. If you haven't seen it, Jericho is an American post-nuclear drama series set in the small town of Jericho, Colorado. It was initially canceled by CBS after it first short season, only to be brought back for a limited number of new episodes after fans mounted a 'Nuts To CBS' campaign. The three-year agreement with Sci Fi gives them rights to the first and second seasons of the series. Jericho is set to make its Sci Fi debut with a four-episode marathon February 11, the day before the show's second-season premiere on CBS. Jericho, will be simulcast in high definition on Sci Fi HD and will begin airing in its regular Sci Fi time slot of 10 p.m. Mondays on February 18.

The Golden Globes, the ceremony known for getting Hollywood's awards season off to a rollicking start, will be reduced to a news conference Sunday by the writers strike and will likely draw picket lines and lack star power. The Screen Actors Guild said it was encouraging its members to skip the show in support of the two-month walkout by the Writers Guild of America. The developments stand as an ominous sign for the Academy Awards, which are scheduled to air Feb. 24 on ABC. The writers guild refused to grant waivers for its members to work on the Oscars or the Globes. Compared with the more formal Oscars, the Globes are presented at a relaxed event that brings out the frisky side of stars. In 1998, for example, Jack Nicholson mimicked Jim Carrey's "butt-talking" routine in accepting his acting award for "As Good As It Gets."

Journeyman Fans Start Rice-A-Roni Campaign

Similar to the 'Nuts To CBS' campaign that may actually have had something to do with saving the show Jericho, Journeyman fans have started their own effort. Journeyman, which has effectively been defacto canceled by NBC since they didn't order any more episodes, is a fantasy drama airing on Monday nights that centers on an unlikely time traveler that ends up helping people throughout their lives. There are only two episodes left which will oddly both air next week on Monday and Wednesday at 9pm Central due to the holidays the following week.
Since the show is set in San Francisco, fans have started sending boxes of Rice-a-Roni (you know, the San Francisco treat) to NBC in hopes of reviving the show. Although it doesn't look too promising right now, if the WGA strike is resolved soon and NBC were to order more episodes, it could come back next season if the principal people on the show have not moved on to other things.
If you want to participate, send your box of Rice-a-Roni to

Nana Visitor To Star On Battlestar Galactica

This just in: Nana Visitor, star on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine for seven seasons, will take on a recurring role on Battlestar Galactica.
Ronald D. Moore told Starburst magazine in a recent interview
“Nana Visitor [Major Kira Nerys on DSN] is playing Emily. She’s another cancer patient in sickbay and who Laura Roslin meets when receiving her chemotherapy treatments, which we call diloxin on our show. Not surprisingly, the president is making regular visits to sickbay this season, and in this story we introduce Emily, who is terminal and much further along in her illness then Laura. Faith is about the relationship between the two women. Nana is going to be terrific for this role, and it’s great to see her again.”

I often think about this when someone comes into the store asking for an older film, out of print, that's never been released to DVD. Yes, even with 80,000 movies released to DVD, films like The African Queen, the original 1927 Jazz Singer, 1941's Sergeant York, or even 1951's The Incredible Shrinking Man still are not. Many people are oblivious to the fact that many movies are out of print on all formats, and may in fact never be released again. Did you know that half of all the movies made before 1950 are lost forever? Even films from as recent as the 1980s are in need of restoration. You may think the movie studios are doing a good job preserving their own films. But evidently this is not the case. The many film-preservation organizations channel their efforts into independent, foreign, or obscure films. It's assumed major Hollywood studios will take care of their own films. Click the link to read the entire article from Variety.

There is little doubt the TV writers strike will result in shorter TV seasons this year. How short? Most shows this season will only produce 11 to 13 episodes total. Wow. This is especially hard on new shows that will not have a full season to build an audience. Bionic Woman will only have 9 shows this season, Chuck will have 13, Smallville will fare slightly better with 15. They will have to stand on the episodes left that have already been written. I wonder if this means DVDs of these short seasons will be released any faster to help make up for lost revenues. Thanks to Mike Ausiello at TV Guide for putting this list together.
