Controversy Over New Film Kick-Ass

SXSW Underway

Weekend Superhero Movie News Wrap-up

Daredevil reboot underway
What's good for one superhero franchise must be good for another, or evidently so thinks Fox as it was revealed this weekend that the studio has screenwriter David Scarpa working on a reboot of Daredevil. Deadline Hollywood makes this interesting comment about the reboot:
The reason this is happening is simple: Hollywood studios with Marvel superheroes need to keep reinventing these Marvel movie franchises or the rights revert back to Disney-based Marvel. Fortunately, the properties are as resilient as the indestructible superheroes themselves.

Captain Awesome as Captain America?
Ryan McPartlin (Captain Awesome from Chuck) in an interview for Moviehole revealed that he has indeed auditioned for the role of Cap in Marvel/Paramount's The First Avenger:Captain America film slated for next summer.
“The one thing I can't stand are these actors that are twittering about auditioning for Captain America. It's really tacky. With that said, it is in the casting process and like many other actors, I read for it, so we'll wait and see what happens. Regardless, I'm pretty psyched to be Captain Awesome for the time being.”

Logan Lerman wants to be Spidey
Just a few days ago Logan Lerman let slip that 'preliminary discussions' were under way in which he was being considered for the lead role in Sony's Spider-Man reboot. But hold on there, Percy Jackson. The next day a Sony rep stated "No offers have been made, nor have any business discussions been made with Lerman."  The young actor's tone changed a bit during press interviews for his current film:
It was clear that junket day for Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief was dedicated to damage control. During the press conference Lerman clarified, “To be totally honest, it’s a role that any young actor would die to play and I’m just hoping to be considered for it more than anything.” He delivered an identical response in an interview with MTV. Think Lerman has had some coaching since slipping up with Access Hollywood?

Marc Webb Reportedly Directing Spider-Man 4

New York Mag's Vulture blog is reporting (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb is slated to direct the next three Spider-Man movies as part of a franchise reboot of the film series.
Webb, whose (500) Days scored a Golden Globe nomination and whose name seems to have predestined him for this job, has long been a favorite of Columbia chairman Amy Pascal. We're told that last year she very nearly hired him to direct the adaptation of Michael Lewis’s Moneyball after she pulled the plug on Steven Soderbergh three days before shooting. She ultimately chose Bennett Miller (Capote), thinking that Moneyball might be hurt by Webb's whimsical style, but she views him as a latter-day Cameron Crowe for the economically and socially angsty Generation Y, and thinks he'd be perfect to explore the conflict within Parker.

Moon director Duncan Jones recently voiced his displeasure with Sony Pictures on Twitter regarding the lack of support his film is getting for an Oscar campaign, including the lack of Academy screeners or ads in industry trade magazines.
Now Movieline is stating a Sony rep cited fear of piracy as a reason for not distributing screeners. Odd, because the studio did distribute screeners to video distributors in advance of the DVD release. I got one.

A representative for the Sony Worldwide Acquisitions Group — which picked Moon up in spring 2008, handed it off to Oscar war horse Sony Pictures Classics in January 2009, then reclaimed it for home-video release this year — acknowledged seeing some of Jones’s grievances. But, he added, the call to avoid Oscar screeners was a business decision as opposed to any lack of support.

“The DVD and Blu-ray come out on Jan. 12 — next Tuesday — and it was felt that to preserve the integrity of the film, we didn’t want to send screeners,” the rep told me. “We’re concerned about piracy. The thing about Moon is that its particular genre is very predisposed toward being uploaded onto the Web. We really just wanted to protect that aspect of it. It’s a simple as that. […] A lot of publicity for Moon is coming out next week. Hopefully that will remind all the consumers, all the readers — and especially any awards folks — that this terrific title is out there.”

Tron Legacy Trailer Released at ComicCon

Ryan Reynolds cast as Green Lantern

via Reuters/Hollywood Reporter
After an intense months-long search, Warner Bros. has chosen Ryan Reynolds to play the title character in "Green Lantern," the studio's live-action movie based on the DC Comics hero.

Reynolds and his representatives entered negotiations for the part Friday, after the studio held two rounds of screen tests for the actor, Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. Justin Timberlake also did a screen test.

The film is being directed by Martin Campbell and produced by Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti.

One reason for the lengthy search process was that De Line, Campbell and the studio each had a different favorite among the finalists, making it difficult to come to a consensus.

If the deal is completed, it would make Reynolds the only actor to have played heroes for both Marvel and DC. He recently starred in a comic-book movie, 20th Century Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," in which he played Deadpool, also known as the Merc with a Mouth. The character is being developed for a spin-off in which Reynolds will star. He also played Marvel's vampire hunter Hannibal King in "Blade: Trinity."

"Lantern" is Reynolds second stab at a DC Comics hero. A few years ago, he was reportedly attached to play DC's "The Flash."
Austin filmmaker Richard Linklater made several personal appearances recently to promote his new documentary about University of Texas baseball coach Augie Garrido, Inning By Inning: A Portrait of a Coach, now available on DVD.
His most recent appearance was yesterday at the Blockbuster store in Pflugerville, Tx. Linklater met with fans and signed autographs for a couple of hours, giving plenty of time to each person. He followed up the event by playing catch with a fan behind the store.
Linklater has gained somewhat of a cult following for his independent films since the early 90s with the releases Slacker (available as a Criterion Collection DVD) and Dazed & Confused.
He has since enjoyed mainstream success with films like School of Rock and Bad News Bears.
Linklater co-founded the Austin Film Society in 1985, which has since proved invaluable to independent and mainstream filmmakers in Austin.

Green Lantern Movie To Film In Australia

From The Hollywood Reporter:
Warner Bros. and DC Comics' next big-budget feature, "Green Lantern," will be made at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney, New South Wales Premier Nathan Rees said Thursday.

Director Martin Campbell will be at the helm of the comic book's big-screen adaptation, working from a script by Greg Berlanti and Michael Green. Donald Deline will produce with a reported budget of $150 million.

Rees said the film will create about 500 jobs and include a "substantial investment" in digital effects work in Australia.

"The decision by Warner Bros. to locate the production in New South Wales is tangible evidence that having a competitive incentive scheme in place returns positive results," Fox Studios Australia CEO Nancy Romano said.

The project is the latest film also to be attracted by the decline in the value of the Australian dollar.

Preproduction on "Green Lantern" is set to begin in July, and filming is scheduled to start in November. Warners is aiming to release the film in December 2010.

FBI Called In Over Wolverine Movie Leak

The FBI are investigating the online leak of an almost finished copy of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a month before the film's theatrical release. The Hugh Jackman film was downloaded an estimated several 100,000 times from file sharing and video streaming websites on Tuesday.

20th Century Fox confirmed the copy had now been removed and the FBI informed.

The studio behind Wolverine stated: "The source of the initial leak and any subsequent postings will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

"The courts have handed down significant criminal sentences for such acts" the studio noted.

Cinematic Titanic Tonight In Austin

Cinematic Titanic is the new movie riffing show from the creator and original cast of Mystery Science Theatre 3000, live on-stage at the Paramount Theater in Austin!
Like MST3K, the show was created by Joel Hodgson and features the same team that first brought the award winning cult-classic series to life: Trace Beaulieu, J. Elvis Weinstein, Frank Conniff, and Mary Jo Pehl. Cinematic Titanic continues the tradition of riffing on ‘the unfathomable’, ‘the horribly great’, and the just plain ‘cheesy’ movies from the past.
Tonight the movie being riffed will be The Dynamite Brothers. Fans of MST3K and stuff like Alamo Drafthouse's Weird Wednesday will not want to miss it.
I just checked and you can STILL buy tickets for tonight's show at GetTix.net!
Below is an example of what to expect:

Fans started gathering outside the Paramount around 6:30pm for the 8pm showing. Local news as well as G4TV were there interviewing fans beforehand and filming the red carpet arrival of the cast.
Judge and his family were the first to arrive at 7:30 to a crowd of cheering fans. Shortly after, the remaining cast arrived in a separate limo. This included David Herman, Ajay Naidu, Gary Cole, Stephen Root, John C. McGinley, Diedrich Bader, Paul Willson, Kinna McInroe, and Todd Duffey. Several cast members re-enacted the printer smashing scene from the film right there on the red carpet.
Vendors hawked Office Space swag inside including Initech t-shirts, bags of flair, and Office Space Blu-rays. The screening was met with wild applause to a packed theater. Mike Judge and the cast fielded questions after the showing.
Judge and a few other cast members milled about the lobby after the show signing autographs and talking to fans.

If this sounds familiar, you probably saw it in the 1997 movie Gattaca. In the film, a sort of instant readout of the newly born baby's genetic code was given to parents right after birth, detailing genetic predisposition from everything from disease to baldness to predicted lifespan. The film shows the logical progression society would then take when this becomes possible, with a sort of genetic underclass being formed. It's well worth watching if you haven't seen it.
Babies born from 2019 onwards will have their genetic code routinely mapped at birth, predicts Jay Flatley, one of the world's leading genome sequencing experts.
Dr Flatley, the chief executive of Illumina, the world's leading genome sequencing company, said technology capable of giving complete DNA read-outs at birth will be widely available within a decade.
Dr Flatley told The Times newspaper that the diminishing cost of the technology would provoke a "healthcare revolution" allowing conditions such as diabetes and heart disease to be predicted and prevented.

Originally released theatrically on February 19, 1999, writer/director Mike Judge's OFFICE SPACE was well received critically but did not initially click with the general public. It wasn't until the film hit video and cable TV that it finally found its audience, soon becoming one of the largest selling catalog titles in the then-burgeoning DVD market. It has since gone on to become one of the biggest selling titles in Fox Home Entertainment history and is a modern day comedy classic.
In celebration of the film's 10th anniversary, Fox Home Entertainment will be releasing the film on Blu-Ray DVD on Tuesday, February 3rd. That following Sunday, February 8th, South by Southwest Film Conference & Festival (SXSW) and Fantastic Fest will co-present the ultimate OFFICE SPACE screening at the legendary Paramount Theater in Austin, TX, where OFFICE SPACE was filmed. This one-time only screening event will take place at 8:00 PM and will include special appearances by writer/director Mike Judge and members of the cast and crew to be announced. Additionally, there will be exclusive giveaways courtesy of Fox Home Entertainment, and co-presenters SXSW and Fantastic Fest have promised special OFFICE SPACE activities before and after the screening. If you are a poorly functioning office fax machine, however, you may want to avoid the festivities entirely.
